Terms of Service

These terms govern your use of the Overwire desktop application, the Overwire CLI, and the overwire.io website (together, “Overwire”). Overwire is developed and operated as a sole proprietorship based in Ontario, Canada (“we”, “us”, “our”). By installing or using Overwire you agree to these terms.

What Overwire is

Overwire is a local workflow workbench: software that runs on your machine to parse, simulate, mock, and execute GitHub Actions workflow files locally. It is a developer tool, not a hosted service: your code, workflows, and secrets are processed on your own hardware.

License grant

Free tier

The CLI and the app's free tier are licensed to you free of charge for personal and commercial use. This is a license, not a sale; Overwire and all associated intellectual property remain ours.

Pro subscription

A Pro subscription grants one named person (a “seat”) a non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the Pro features of the app for the duration of the subscription, on up to 3 activated devices at a time. You can deactivate a device yourself in Settings to free an activation slot. License keys expire when the subscription ends, after which the app continues to work on the free tier.

Lifetime license

A Lifetime license grants one seat a perpetual license to use the Pro features of the app, on up to 3 activated devices at a time, together with all software updates. There is no update window and no renewal. Your license never stops working.

License validation

Paid licenses are validated against Polar's license API on launch and periodically thereafter, so the app needs an internet connection from time to time. The app tolerates being offline for up to 14 days between successful validations; after that it reverts to the free tier until it can validate again. A validation problem never interrupts a run in progress.

Updates

Software updates are included with every paid tier while the license is active, and forever for Lifetime licenses. Updates are provided as and when we release them: we do not promise a release schedule, particular future features, or that development will continue for any period. A license is a right to use the software, not a subscription to future services; if updates ever stop, every version you already have keeps working.

Restrictions

• Don't redistribute, sublicense, sell, or rent Overwire or your license key.
• Don't circumvent, disable, or interfere with license enforcement or activation limits.
• Don't reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the software, except to the extent a law expressly permits it despite this restriction.
• Don't use Overwire to violate someone else's terms of service or the law.

Purchases, billing, and refunds

Merchant of record

Paid licenses are sold by Polar Software Inc. (Polar) as merchant of record. Your purchase, payment processing, invoices, and applicable taxes are handled by Polar under its own terms of sale.

Delivery

Delivery is electronic and immediate: Polar emails your receipt and license key to your purchase email within minutes of a successful payment, and you download the software itself from this website. Nothing is shipped. If the email hasn't arrived after a few minutes, check your spam folder or recover the key through Polar's customer portal; if you still can't find it, write to [email protected] from your purchase email and we will sort it out.

Subscriptions and cancellation

Pro subscriptions renew automaticallyat the end of each billing period (monthly or yearly), and Polar charges the payment method on file until you cancel. You can cancel at any time through Polar's customer portal (linked in every receipt email) or by writing to [email protected]. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period: you keep Pro access until then, and there are no further charges. Polar emails a receipt for every renewal charge. If we change subscription pricing, the change applies from your next renewal, and we will give you at least 30 days' notice by email before it takes effect.

Refunds

If you are not satisfied with a paid license, contact [email protected] within 14 days of your first purchase for a full refund, no questions asked. This applies to the first charge of a subscription and to Lifetime purchases. Renewal charges are not covered by this guarantee: cancel any time before your renewal date to avoid them. If a subscription renews when you did not mean it to, write to us within 14 days of the renewal charge and we may refund it at our discretion. Refunds are processed through Polar. This policy does not limit any statutory refund or withdrawal rights you have as a consumer.

Third-party software and services

Live workflow execution requires a Docker-API-compatible container engine (e.g., Docker Desktop, Colima, OrbStack, Rancher Desktop) that you provide and install separately. Overwire does not include, bundle, or resell any container engine, and your use of one (including any commercial licensing terms that apply to it, such as Docker Desktop's) is solely between you and its vendor.

Workflows you run may fetch third-party actions and dependencies at your direction; those are fetched by your machine under their own licenses, and you are responsible for complying with them. Open source components redistributed with Overwire are listed in the application's notices.

Your content

Overwire processes your repositories, workflow files, configuration, and secrets locally. We claim no rights over your content, and the software does not transmit it to us. See the Privacy Policy for the narrow set of data that is collected.

Disclaimer of warranty

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Overwire is provided “as is” and “as available” without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that Overwire will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that defects will be corrected. Overwire is a local testing tool: it aims to predict how workflows behave on GitHub's hosted platform, but we do not warrant that local results will match hosted results in every case.

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of implied warranties, so parts of the above may not apply to you. If the consumer laws of your place of residence give you statutory warranties or guarantees that cannot be excluded, nothing in these terms limits them.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or exemplary damages, including loss of profits, revenue, data, goodwill, or business, arising from your use of Overwire, and our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid for Overwire in the 12 months preceding the claim (or, if you hold a Lifetime license and it is greater, the amount you paid for that license).

You decide which workflows to run, and you are responsible for their effects on your own systems, containers, and data. Treat workflow files from sources you do not trust with the same care as any other code you execute. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations of liability, so parts of this section may not apply to you.

Termination

We may terminate your license if you materially breach these terms and do not cure the breach within 30 days of notice. You may stop using Overwire at any time. Sections that by their nature should survive termination (including the warranty disclaimer and limitation of liability) survive.

Changes to these terms

We may revise these terms as the product evolves. Material changes will be reflected in the “last updated” date above, and continued use after a change constitutes acceptance.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable in Ontario, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods does not apply. Courts located in Ontario have exclusive jurisdiction over disputes arising from these terms, and both parties consent to venue there.

If you use Overwire as a consumer, nothing in this section deprives you of protections granted by mandatory consumer-protection laws of your country or province of residence, and it does not prevent you from bringing claims in your local courts where those laws give you that right.

Overwire is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by GitHub, Inc. “GitHub” and “GitHub Actions” are trademarks of GitHub, Inc.

Docker is a trademark of Docker, Inc. All other trademarks belong to their respective owners; Overwire uses these names only to truthfully describe compatibility.
